Frequently Asked Questions About Vision Care & Products

How is an optometrist different from an ophthalmologist?

Optometrists like our doctors provide comprehensive eye care including exams, vision correction, contact lens fittings, and treatment of many eye diseases. We diagnose and manage conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic eye disease. Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who perform eye surgery. When surgery is needed, we work with trusted ophthalmologists to ensure you get the best possible care while continuing to manage your ongoing eye health needs.

Yes, emergency eye care is one of our specialties. We handle eye infections, foreign objects in the eye, corneal injuries, and other urgent situations that urgent care centers and emergency rooms often can’t properly treat due to lack of specialized equipment. We have after-hours emergency contact options and can often see you the same day. Our doctors have the microscopes and tools necessary to properly diagnose and treat eye emergencies.

Children should have their first comprehensive eye exam by age one, then at age three, and before starting school. Many vision problems in children don’t have obvious symptoms, and early detection is crucial for proper visual development. We provide pediatric-friendly exams and specialize in myopia management for children whose nearsightedness is progressing. Catching and addressing vision problems early can prevent learning difficulties and other issues.

Most prescriptions should be checked annually, though some people need updates more or less frequently based on age and eye health. Children and teenagers often need more frequent changes due to growth and development. Adults over 40 may need updates as presbyopia progresses. We’ll let you know if your prescription has changed enough to warrant new glasses or contacts, and we never pressure you to purchase new eyewear if your current prescription is still meeting your needs.

We’ve served the Mandan and Bismarck community for over 70 years, caring for multiple generations of families. Our practice combines the personalized care of a local practice with access to advanced technology through the Vision Source network. We offer services that many providers don’t, including emergency eye care and specialized myopia management. Most importantly, we treat each patient as an individual, taking time to understand your unique vision needs and concerns.

Most adults should have comprehensive eye exams every one to two years, but this can vary based on your age, health, and risk factors. Children should have their first eye exam by age one, then regularly throughout school years. If you have diabetes, glaucoma, or a family history of eye disease, you may need more frequent visits. Our team at Vision Source Mandan can help determine the right schedule for your specific needs and provide emergency care when unexpected issues arise.
